Construction began in late May on Winnipeg’s newest indoor soccer complex. The 120,000 square foot facility is on the grounds of the Garden City Community Centre in northwest Winnipeg. It will be the third FIFA-sized indoor pitch in Winnipeg.
The other two FIFA-sized indoor soccer fields are located new the University of Manitoba and near the University of Winnipeg in the downtown core.
"This will be the second fourplex," said Bretecher, the community centre’s vice-president of house and grounds.
"Our facility will have one pitch with four quadrants. We will have top of the line turf and 360 degree seating. We will also have a fully-lit outdoor synthetic turf field. "A Canadian Soccer Federation official has described our facility as world class."
The cost of the project is just less than $21 million. Funders include the government of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg that have contributed $7 million each, and the Winnipeg Soccer Federation which is committing up to $5.4 million.
The remaining $1.5 million is money that was originally intended to be used to put a vinyl bubble over the Investors Group Field football stadium to allow winter use by soccer, football and ultimate players.
That plan has been shelved in favour of the soccer facility. The new indoor facility will complement an existing indoor soccer facility at the Garden City Community Centre, as well as two new indoor ice rinks currently under construction there.
The contractor on the project is Bird Construction. The new facility is scheduled to be ready for use next May or June – allowing for a couple of months before the indoor soccer season starts to iron out any kinks and deal with any issues.
