EDMONTON — An iconic Edmonton bridge is ready for its next act.
Construction is set to begin on the City of Edmonton’s Groat Road Bridges and Road Renewal Project, a $46-million initiative to undertake substantial structural rehabilitation of one of the city’s key traffic bridges in order to extend its life by another 50 years. The bridge is approximately 300 metres in length and was built in 1955, with a previous rehabilitation in 1989.
Graham Construction has been tasked by the city as general contractor on the project and will also rehabilitate the Emily Murphy Park Road Bridge to the south of the North Saskatchewan River, the Victoria Park Bridge to the north and will carry out a roadworks optimization program adjacent to all three bridges.
Graham will use an overhead gantry crane to complete the bulk of superstructure demolition and construction, which the company said will reduce the overall environmental impact, cost and schedule of the project, which is estimated for completion by 2020.
The City of Edmonton revamped its infrastructure department in 2016 after delays occurred on projects such as the 102nd Avenue Bridge, the Walterdale Bridge and the Metro LRT Line. Problems included girders buckling on the 102nd Avenue Bridge and delivery delays of key components for the Walterdale Bridge.
