ROCHE COVE, B.C. — The 90-year old single-lane timber bridge on Gillespie Road at Roche Cove near Sooke, B.C. will be replaced over the summer months as the province moves forward with construction of a new two-lane concrete bridge, that will include 1.5-metre paved shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists.
“Gillespie Road is an important link for people in Sooke, those accessing parks, lodges and other recreational spots, and is a critical alternate route when the highway is closed,” said Claire Trevena, minister of transportation and infrastructure, in a statement. “Constructing a new, wider bridge ensures traffic can flow safely and effectively as people travel to, from and within Sooke.”
An environmental assessment was completed for the project in 2017 by Hemmera Envirochem Inc, with Klohn Crippen Berger completing the engineering design.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has awarded a $3.6-million contract to North Gate Pacific Contracting Ltd. of Maple Ridge to construct the new bridge structure that is expected to open to traffic in fall 2018.
