REGINA — Construction work is set to begin on Regina’s new $30.1-million Transit Fleet Maintenance Facility (TFMF).
At 60,000 square feet, the facility is to include both 40- and 60-foot full-service and repair bays with hoists and will be built to environmental and sustainability standards, states a release from the City of Regina.
The new facility is being built adjacent to the city’s existing 70-year-old Transit Operations Centre on 333 Winnipeg St.
Since the new facility will include maintenance space, it will save over 3,000 hours a year spent transporting buses between the city’s maintenance facility along Albert Street and the operations centre, said the release.
“A new transit maintenance facility allows us to better care for our growing fleet of buses, and the connection to existing transit facilities ensures we are becoming more efficient and sustainable in our operations,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere in a statement.
“Improved facilities will also make for a safer environment for employees who maintain the bus fleet.”
The facility was approved under the New Building Canada Fund in 2016 resulting in the project costs being split between all three levels of government. The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are each providing $9.71 million for the project, while the city is contributing approximately $10.6 million and covering further remaining project costs, said the release.
As the current Transit Operations Centre no longer meets the functional requirements of the city’s fleet operations, it is expected to be repurposed as a roadway vehicle and equipment storage facility once the new facility is operational.
The construction contract for the new TFMF was awarded to Westridge Construction in July 2018 and occupancy is slated for early 2020.
