City of Vancouver expands Neighbourhood Energy Utility into Mount Pleasant
WARREN FREY — The City of Vancouver is expanding its Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) in False Creek to service buildings in the adjacent Mount Pleasant area. The NEU captures waste energy from sewage and uses it to provide space heating and hot water to nearby buildings.

VANCOUVER — The City of Vancouver is expanding the Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) with the addition of a distribution pipe along a segment of Quebec Street to extend service to buildings in the Mount Pleasant area by late 2019.

The NEU captures waste thermal energy from sewage to provide low-carbon space heating and hot water to buildings in the Southeast False Creek and Great Northern Way neighbourhoods. The utility began operations in 2010 and has since expanded to serve 5.4 million square feet of residential, institutional and commercial space.

As part of the project, streets will be rebuilt from 1st Avenue to 3rd Avenue on Quebec Street with new sidewalks, an extension of the protected bike lane, upgraded traffic signals and street lights, and green rainwater infrastructure.

Construction was anticipated to begin in late March and end in spring 2020.
