Completed B.C. school in Fort St. John opens ahead of schedule

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A new school that will serve Fort St. John is opening to students ahead of schedule.

Anne Roberts Young Elementary, which now serves hundreds of students, includes a child care centre and indoor multi-purpose rooms for community use.

B.C. officials spent $31.1 million to build Anne Roberts Young Elementary school while the Peace River North School District chipped in $300,000, for a total construction budget of $31.4 million.

As the new school opens, several portables will be removed from nearby schools or will be modified for other use.

Work on the school wrapped up long before its anticipated January 2021 completion date. The school has capacity for 505 students in kindergarten to Grade 6. The facility will help to accommodate the growing population in Fort St. John.

In addition to traditional school amenities, the two-storey facility includes a neighbourhood learning centre with child care, before- and after-school care and multi-purpose spaces for community use.
