First Notice: Wage index report on the way; Alberta accepts housing panel recs; Vancouver’s Marine Drive gets new year upgrades

Construction union wage index report due Thursday 

This week watch for the following reports from Statistics Canada among others: Monthly Survey of Manufacturing for October 2020 (delivered Tuesday); Consumer Price Index for November 2020 (Wednesday); Construction Union Wage Rate Index for November 2020 (Thursday); and Weekly Update: Canadian Economic Dashboard and COVID-19 (Friday). 

Alberta government accepts housing panel recommendations  

The Alberta government has accepted all 19 recommendations outlined in the Affordable Housing Review Panel’s final report. The panel recommended shifting the province’s role from owner and controller to partner and funder, changing programs to support Albertans instead of buildings and drawing on local and private sector expertise to provide more housing options.  

Major street upgrades for Vancouver’s Marine Drive in the new year 

The City of Vancouver will perform water, sewer, electrical and street upgrades on Marine Drive starting in January 2021. Construction activities will include replacing four kilometres of aging watermain, installing one kilometre of separated sanitary and stormsewer pipelines and upgrading traffic signals at eight intersections.  

Alberta Labour Relations Board reappoints members 

The Alberta Labour Relations Board is reappointing two members to serve in new positions effective Jan. 1, 2021. Current chair William Johnson will step down from his current role to become a part-time vice-chair while current vice-chair Nancy Schlesinger will take the position of chair. Schlesinger will also keep her position as essential services commissioner.
