New Westminster gears up for classroom expansion with school renovations

NEW WESTMINISTER, B.C. — New Westminster is set to expand its educational infrastructure as the provincial government allocates funds for crucial renovations.

The province is contributing approximately $1.4 million for École Fraser River Middle School and about $1.2 million for École Qayqayt Elementary School. The four new classrooms are expected to be utilized starting in the 2025-26 school year.

Over the past six years, the provincial government has invested $77.9 million in funding for 790 new student spaces in the New Westminster School District. This investment includes initiatives such as the construction of Skwo:wech Elementary and seismic upgrades at Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary.

Since September 2017, the Government of B.C. has announced 25,000 new student spaces and 35,000 seismically safer seats, with approximately $4 billion allocated for new and improved schools and land purchases for future educational facilities throughout the province.

Budget 2023 earmarks $3.4 billion for school capital projects over the next three years, encompassing new and expanded schools, seismic upgrades, replacements, and land acquisitions for future schools.
