Simon Fraser Bridge reopens after major upgrades

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — The Simon Fraser Bridge in Prince George recently reopened following the completion of significant upgrades.

These improvements were designed to extend the bridge’s lifespan and enhance its functionality.

The refurbishment work involved a complete replacement of the bridge’s deck and a reinforcement of the southbound truss. Additionally, the bridge now features increased height clearance, aligning with the adjacent northbound crossing. This change allows taller transport vehicles to pass through the Ferry Avenue underpass with ease.

Other major modifications include the widening of bridge shoulders and the installation of new crash-tested barriers on both sides of the bridge. These safety upgrades are expected to benefit the roughly 18,000 vehicles that traverse the bridge daily.

The Simon Fraser Bridge, a key component of Highway 97, was originally constructed in 1963. In 2009, it was expanded with a twin two-lane bridge, bringing the total capacity to four lanes. This bridge serves as a vital link in the northern supply chain, supporting the transport of commercial goods and facilitating key industries such as transportation, forestry, mining, and oil and gas.
