Final construction touches begin on Highway 1 in Kicking Horse Canyon
FLICKR.COM — The Trans-Canada Highway through the Kicking Horse Canyon now features a wider, safer, four-lane divided highway as the new westbound lanes have opened. This development is part of Phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Canyon project, which reached substantial completion with the opening of all four lanes on Nov. 30.

GOLDEN, B.C. – Final work on Phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project on Highway 1 starts today (April 2).

Highway 1 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through Kicking Horse Canyon for the duration of the remaining project work, allowing crews to safely complete paving, line painting, wildlife fencing and landscaping, a release said.

Full closures of up to two hours are scheduled for April 3, April 15, April 29 and May 13, as well as early mornings on June 10, June 11, June 24 and June 25.

Drivers may encounter two-minute stoppages until project completion later in the spring and are asked to obey signs and watch for traffic-control personnel, the release said.

The three previous phases of work on the Kicking Horse Canyon project turned 21 kilometres of narrow two-lane highway into a four-lane, 100 km/h standard highway. Major construction of the fourth and final phase to complete the remaining 4.8 kilometres began in early 2021.
