Manitoba worker dies after trench collapse

OAKBANK, MAN. — A construction worker in Manitoba has died after the walls of a trench he was working in collapsed on him.

According to Manitoba RCMP, on May 6 at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers in Oakbank responded to a report of a trapped construction worker at a work site on Hillside Road in the Regional Municipality (RM) of Springfield.

Police say construction crews were digging a large trench when the walls collapsed, trapping one of the workers.

Emergency personnel from the surrounding areas, along with the RM of Springfield Fire Department and a specialized team with the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, responded to the scene. Emergency crews worked to rescue the worker but on Thursday morning the 39-year-old man from the RM of Hanover was found dead.

Workplace Health and Safety were notified and were also at the scene. The RCMP along with Workplace Safety and Health continue to investigate.
