RICHMOND, B.C. – WorkSafeBC has announced construction will be included in its new high-risk strategies and industry initiatives.
The three-year plan will target construction, forestry, health care and social services, and manufacturing, sectors where WorkSafeBC believes the risk of serious injury or death are the highest.
The plan will focus on the following initiatives that target specific workplaces or risks:
- Agriculture Initiative
- Asbestos Initiative: Commercial Properties
- Asbestos Initiative: Residential Enforcement
- Bullying, Harassment and Prohibited Action Initiative
- Confined Space Initiative
- Crane and Mobile Equipment Initiative
- Motion Picture and Television Initiative
- Marine Initiative
- MSI Initiative
- Occupational Disease Initiative
- Oil and Gas Initiative
- Process Safety Initiative
- Program and Committee Evaluation Initiative
- Psychological Health and Safety Initiative
- Serious Injury Prevention Initiative
- Small Business Initiative
- Sustained Compliance Initiative
“The purpose of our high-risk strategies and industry initiatives is to direct our prevention efforts —including education, consultation and enforcement — to the industries, activities and issues that have the greatest risk of serious injury,” explained Al Johnson, head of prevention services at WorkSafeBC in a statement.
The strategy includes implementing workplace inspections that follow a “risk-based, back-to-basics” approach.
WorkSafeBC prevention officers will engage with employers, and where possible, worker representatives, to provide foundational information on managing risks that apply to all workplaces, including COVID-19, as well as areas of focus that are specific to their industry. The efforts are reviewed each year and can be adjusted to address emerging issues.
