An employee of a southern Alberta construction company pleaded not guilty in provincial court to an environmental charge after hundreds of fish died near Pincher Creek two years ago.

Chinook Pipelines and one of its employees is accused of allowing chlorinated water to get into the community’s storm sewer.

On September 1, 2006, Environment Canada and health officials were called in to investigate allegations of a one-time chlorine leak, after hundreds of fish were found dead along the Pincher Creek bed.

Residents watched with alarm as officials hauled away garbage bags full of dead fish.

The charges, laid by Environment Canada under the Federal Fisheries Act, carry a maximum penalty of $1 million. A lawyer, appearing on behalf of the defendants, is expected to appear in court November 4, 2008 and a trial date is expected to be set at that time.
