The Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), a counter-terrorism unit operating as part of the Defence Department, is building an equipment depot in British Columbia to improve their response to threats on the West Coast.
The $10 million depot will be located at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria.
The depot initiative is not linked to the 2010 Winter Olympics, although the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) is expected to play a major security role for the games.
The depot will allow equipment for special forces units to be pre-positioned, decreasing the amount of time it would take for JTF2 or special operations to respond to a terrorist incident or threat.
Currently, obtaining enough aircraft to transport equipment on short notice is a problem.
