Oakbank RCMP reported that on Oct. 18 a construction worker and a motor vehicle were involved in a collision on Highway 207 between the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 15.

A traffic control person has been killed at a construction site near Winnipeg after being hit by a passing car.

Oakbank RCMP reported that on Oct. 18, at about 4 p.m., a construction worker and a motor vehicle were involved in a collision on Highway 207 between the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 15.

Oakbank is located about 15 kilometres east of Winnipeg.

“Initial investigation indicates that a 1996 Chrysler Intrepid was travelling northbound on Highway 207 when it struck a female signal person working in a construction zone,” said Const. Miles Hiebert.

“The driver of the Intrepid was a 67-year-old man from the RM (Rural Municipality) of Springfield.”

Local fire and ambulance were dispatched to the scene were they attended to the victim, 21-year-old Brittany Murray of Winnipeg. She was transported to hospital by ambulance in serious condition.

Later that evening, Oakbank RCMP reported that Murray died in hospital as a result of her injuries.

An RCMP traffic collision analyst attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

I don’t have any information about the investigation at this point,” said Hiebert. “There is quite a lot of information to collect and there are a number of witnesses that need to be interviewed.”

Hiebert said that a preliminary investigation has been undertaken, which involves collecting data and taking pictures at the scene of the collision. At this stage of the investigation, it is too early to determine if charges are being considered.

“In general, if investigators think that there was some carelessness and charges are warranted, then charges will be laid,” he said.
