The City of Greater Sudbury announced Prestigious Properties Four Ltd. and Metcap Management Inc. were charged under the Ontario Fire Prevention and Protection Act with 41 counts of Failure to Ensure Smoke Alarms are Maintained and four counts related to the maintenance of walls and ceilings to prevent the spread of fire.
The City of Greater Sudbury announced Prestigious Properties Four Ltd. and Metcap Management Inc. were charged under the Ontario Fire Prevention and Protection Act over allegations involving smoke alarms and maintenance of walls and ceilings in apartments.
Canmore, Alberta-based Prestigious Properties Four Toronto-based Metcap Management have been charged with 41 counts of Failure to Ensure Smoke Alarms are Maintained and four counts related to the maintenance of walls and ceilings to prevent the spread of fire.
The charges, which were laid by the City of Greater Sudbury Fire Service, have yet to be proven in court.
On Feb. 28, a resident at 227 Notre Dame Avenue was injured as a result of a fire. Charges were laid after inspections at three properties owned and managed by the companies in Sudbury at 227 Notre Dame Avenue, 226 Jogues Street and 236 Jogues Street.
The City of Greater Sudbury said its fire inspectors have ensured the infractions have been corrected.
Under the Ontario Fire Code, corporations found guilty can be fined up to $100,000 per infraction. Fines for individuals found guilty of an offence can be as high as $50,000 per count and can also result in one year in jail.
