The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) revealed their Gold Award winners at their 23rd annual Awards of Excellence.

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) revealed their Gold Award winners at their 23rd annual Awards of Excellence.

“This is the one night when the entire industry can come together to recognize and celebrate excellence in construction,” said Keith Sashaw, VRCA president.

The event was held on Oct. 19 at the new Vancouver Convention Centre.

Three Silver Award winning projects were earlier named in many of the award categories.

A Gold Award winner was announced the gala.

The winning projects represented about $1.2 billion in construction the British Columbia.

“All too often the contractor is taken for granted,” said Sashaw.

“We build these wonderful monuments and testaments to the ingenuity of man.”

He explained that the judges focused on the quality of construction, adherence to schedule and budget, and the impact that contractors had on the project, when making their decisions.

PCL Constructors Westcoast Constructors Inc. took home the top prize for a general contractor working on a project worth more than $40 million for their work on Sparkling Hill Resort near Vernon.

The 152 room spa/hotel is based on a European concept. The design also features more than 3.5 million Swarovski crystals.

“The crystal is certainly a major feature of the hotel,” said Rupert Marshall, project manager for PCL.

“It presented its own challenges. It had to be built within a millimeter of tolerance over the total four-storey height.”

The project was also built through one of the worst winters in Vernon’s history.

“A lot of effort, time and vision is put into such a project,” he said.

“It’s never been done anywhere in the world before, incorporating the spa theme with the crystal architecture.”

The Gold Award for a general contractor working on a project worth between $15 million and $40 million went to Scott Construction Group for the Robert H.N. Ho Research Centre.
