Ontario construction safety blitz focusing on traffic control starts June 1

In June, Ontario Ministry of Labour inspectors will visit construction sites to ensure safe traffic control measures are in place. Inspectors will check to see whether traffic protection plans are kept on site and whether workers know how to carry out those plans.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour announced this week that starting Friday, its inspectors will visit construction sites to ensure safe traffic control measures are in place.

The month-long blitz in June will include road work sites and other construction sites where vehicles and heavy equipment, including asphalt pavers, backhoe loaders and cranes, are used.

Inspectors will check to see whether traffic protection plans are kept on site and whether workers know how to carry out those plans, the ministry stated in a press release Thursday.

Labour officials will also look at traffic control devices, such as signs, cones and barricades, and verify they are in good condition and correctly placed.

The ministry also aims to ensure traffic control workers are properly trained and do not perform any other work when directing traffic. Inspectors will also check to ensure high visibility clothing is worn by all workers who may be endangered by vehicle traffic.
