A worker has died as a result of a suspected drowning at the site of a water treatment plant under construction near Fort McMurray, Alberta.

“I was extremely saddened to learn of this tragic event,” said Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake. “On behalf of the municipality, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to family and friends who have been affected. During this difficult time, our community mourns with you.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to the water treatment facility on Silin Forest Road, near Highway 63 at about 8 a.m. on Sept. 26, to assist emergency medical services.

When the RCMP arrived, EMS was dealing with the body of a previously missing worker, who was found submerged under water inside one of the buildings at the facility.

The victim, a 32 year-old male from Sherwood Park, Alberta, was pronounced deceased on scene.

Although foul play is not suspected at this time, the police investigation continues, as does the Occupational Health and Safety investigation.

The exact cause of death is not known at this time, however given the circumstances, drowning is suspected.
