Alberta Tory leadership candidate Ric McIver says his rival Jim Prentice is behaving like a "candy man" for making all kinds of promises on school construction.

McIver says it's easy in a campaign to make wild spending promises without checking to see if money and logistics are in place to follow through.

On Thursday, Prentice criticizing the current Tory government for failing on its school construction promises.

Former premier Alison Redford had announced two years ago that her government would build 50 new schools and modernize 70 more by 2016 to meet skyrocketing demand.

To date, ground has not been broken on any of the schools, and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Drysdale now says 19 of them won't be completed until 2017.

Prentice said he would get the 50 new schools built faster by reprioritizing capital spending, plus build 50 more on top of that if necessary.
