The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology has added two new trades to its pre-employment program for the fall.
Now those interested in sheet metal and steamfitter-pipefitter work can join current pre-employment offerings — cabinetmaker, carpenter, electrician, plumber and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic.
In SAIT’s pre-employment program, the 12-15 week curriculum equips students with job-ready skills and safety training prior to commencing work with an employer.
This differs from the traditional apprenticeship approach, which requires applicants to already be working with an employer in their desired field of training.
The new programs were established based on industry need and projected job growth in Alberta.
