Calgary announces 2017 Mayor’s Urban Design award winners

CALGARY, ALTA.
The 2017 winners of the City of Calgary’s Mayor’s Urban Design awards have been announced.

Calgary recognizes the contributions of designers and architects through the awards on a biennial basis. The awards were held on Nov. 15 at the National Music Centre in Calgary’s downtown, which was the winner in the People’s Choice “favourite building” category for Allied Works Architecture and Kasian Architecture.
The other People’s Choice award in the same category went to Bowness Park, owned by the City of Calgary with consulting by the IBI Group, Lorne Simpson and James Reid.
Winners in the Housing Innovation category were Grow, designed by Modern Office of Design + Architecture, which also won for the Village project. Both projects are also owned by RNDSQR. Arrive at Bowness, owned by Attainable Homes Calgary, won an award for Hindle Architects Ltd.
The New Central Library won in the Great City, Great Design category for architects Snohetta and DIALOG Design. The City Edge Development winner was the Great Plains Recreation Facility by Marshall Tittemore Architects & MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects, and the Mawson Ubran Design award went to the City of Calgary’s parks.
The Urban Fragments award was given to Crossroads Garden Shed, designed by 5468796 Architecture, and C-Square won in the Civic Design Projects category for the marc boutin architectural collaborative inc. & Scatliff + Miller + Murray Inc.
The King Edward Arts Hub and Incubator won the Urban Architecture award for Nyhoff Architecture, which also won in the Community Improvement Projects category for East Village Junction.
The Approved or Adopted Urban Design Plans winner was the marc boutin architectural collaborative inc. & Arriola & Fiol Arquitectes for the Civic District Public Realm Strategy, and the firm also won in the Conceptual/Theoretical Urban Design Projects category for the Fourth Street Underpass Enhancement project.
Eighty-nine submissions were judged in 12 categories. More information about the project winners is available at www.calgary.ca/muda.
“Recognizing the people behind our vibrant buildings and spaces in our city is important. Well-designed spaces make people feel welcome, improves safety and accessibility and creates a memorable sense of place,” City of Calgary chief urban designer David Down said in a statement.
