Regina demolition gets the ball rolling on a massive development

A four-phase demolition and construction project is underway that will add hundreds of thousands of square feet of indoor building and tradeshow exhibit space in Regina, Sask. The project will help transform Evraz Place, an exhibition site that hosts a variety of entertainment, sporting, recreational and cultural activities.

The new International Trade Centre (ITC) already  boasts more than half a million square feet of indoor space and close to one million square feet of outdoor space. "This facility will greatly enhance our event flexibility and capacity, which will benefit our city and province," said Mark Allan, the Regina Exhibition Association president and CEO.

"It will add 150,000 sq. ft. of connected indoor building space and 90,000 sq. ft. of exhibit and tradeshow space to the existing one million sq. ft. of indoor space on the property today."

In fall 2015, The Regina Exhibition Association Limited (which operates Evraz Place), together with the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, the City of Regina, Canadian Western Agribition and the Regina Hotel Association, announced that $37 million in funding was secured for the construction of the ITC. The new building will replace 14 old and decrepit buildings on the west side of Evraz Place with one new 150,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility. The building will connect the Canada Centre on the western edge of the property with the AgEx Building and will result in all remaining buildings on the 100-acre property (with the exception of the new stadium) being interconnected.

While no formal plans or decisions have been made, consideration is also being given to expanding the Lewvan Drive entrance to enable improved access to and exit from the west side of the property. The demolition and ITC construction project will occur in four phases.

The first phase (January 2016 to March 2016) includes the demolition of 10.5 of 14 targeted buildings. Phase 2 (March 2016 to October 2017) will be the construction of the new centre. Phase 3 (January 2017 to April 2017) will see the demolition of the remaining 3.5 targeted buildings. Finally, Phase 4 (May 2017 to October 2017) will wrap up with parking and exterior site work. The ITC is expected to open in November 2017.

The federal government is contributing about $11 million through the Growing Forward 2 program. The province is also proving $11 million through the same program. The City of Regina is chipping in $11 million with the rest coming from the Regina Hotel Association ($3 million) and Canadian Western Agribition ($1 million).
