DUGALD, MAN. — The province of Manitoba has announced a major upgrade to the Ecole Dugald School.
The school, a kindergarten to Grade 8 English and French immersion facility, has an enrolment of 470 students as of September 2017.
New housing developments in the area in recent years have contributed to a rise in enrolment and the school has exceeded its core capacity of 375 students, explains a release.
Ecole Dugald has relied on modular classrooms since 2008.
The planned 19,392-square-foot addition will create space for six new classrooms, a science room and a 5,600-square-foot gymnasium. The existing 3,100-square-foot gymnasium will undergo renovations and be converted into a multipurpose room.
"A new gym will provide students with more opportunities to get involved in sports and develop the kinds of healthy, active lifestyles we know are important," Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart said in a statement.
Phase two of the project, Wishart said, will be construction of a 6,450-square-foot childcare centre to accommodate 20 infants and 54 preschool students.
"The Ecole Dugald School community and the Sunrise School Division are thrilled by the announcement of the addition. There has been a long history of the need for the addition and this has been a top priority for the board of trustees. The additional classrooms and gym will provide the additional space to support student learning," said Sunrise School Division area trustee Cassandra Kiernicki.
The province of Manitoba will spend more than $92.4 million in capital spending for 2017-18 infrastructure projects. Both the renovation and addition of Ecole Dugald School are expected to be complete by December 2018.
