Five teams shortlisted for Winnipeg mixed-use regeneration project

WINNIPEG — A major mixed-use project in Winnipeg has narrowed down its choice of designers down to five firms. The land where the development will be placed is currently occupied by a car park and a vacated public safety building.

CentreVenture Development Corporation recently announced the shortlist for its Market Lands – Southern Parcel design competition after 23 firms submitted at the request for qualifications stage.

The five firms are Montreal-based Daoust Lestage and Saucier+Perrotte, Toronto’s Dtah and Vancouver’s DIALOG, along with Winnipeg-based 1X1 Architecture Inc., which will partner with dRMM and LDA Design, two London, England firms.

The competition is focused on the southern parcel of the Market Lands area, and each shortlisted team will submit conceptual designs for a 100-unit affordable housing complex with a public market building, main floor cultural hub, and integrated public realm and plaza space.

The teams will present their proposals on Dec. 7 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in an event open to the public. The jury, consisting of eight individuals from architecture firms, municipal government, academia and other disciplines will deliberate before announcing the winner on or before Dec. 14.
