BURNABY, B.C. – The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment has expanded its scope to include a new inpatient tower and an integrated cancer centre as part of Phase 2 of the ongoing project.
The business plan for the proposed 12-storey tower, which will also contain a new BC Cancer Centre was recently approved and will feature 160 private rooms as well as general medicine, medical oncology, cardiac telemetry and intensive care and high-acuity units and a new medical-imaging department. The cancer centre will include 54 ambulatory care rooms, 31 chemotherapy chairs, space for five linear accelerators, space for two PET/CT scanners, an oncology pharmacy, and clinical trials and research space.
Phase 2 will also include demolition of the West Wing Building, renovations to the existing support facilities building, including expanding the emergency department to 104 treatment spaces, and renovations to the endoscopy suite in the existing nursing tower.
The procurement process is set to begin with construction planned to begin in 2025. Completion is estimated for 2030. The cost of Phase 2 is approximately $1.7 billion, a release said, with funding from the Province of B.C., the Burnaby Hospital Foundation and the BC Cancer Foundation.
Phase 1 of the project included a maternity unit, a neonatal intensive care unit and a medical in-patient area capable of isolating infectious disease. The cost of Phase 1 is approximately $683 million, funded through the Government of B.C., Fraser Health and Burnaby Hospital Foundation.
The hospital was originally built in 1952.
