Burnaby Lake aquatic facility moves to detailed design phase

BURNABY, B.C. – Burnaby City Council has approved the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex project to advance into the detailed design to create a new aquatic and arena facility at Burnaby Lake.

Elements of the new facility include a 50 metre pool with 10 lanes, a diving tower and boards, a combined leisure and six-lane 25 metre pool, a family hot tub and an NHL-sized arena for ice and dry floor activities.

Burnaby City Council voted to abandon a previous site concept earlier in 2023 and the new project is expected to achieve significant cost savings in comparison.

“The newly envisioned project would retain the key elements, such as the 50 metre pool and arena, while reducing costs through a variety of measures including combining the leisure pool and six-lane pool into one,” a City of Burnaby release stated.

The City of Burnaby will now begin the detailed design development and costing phase of the project. The timeline for construction will be outlined in a follow-up report to council expected in early spring 2024.
