T&T to help chart SMR risk management systems

TORONTO — Turner & Townsend (T&T) has been appointed as the prime vendor to support Capital Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to chart the risk management systems, standards and best practices for the development of small modular reactor (SMR) generation facilities.

It’s part of the initial information gathering steps to explore the feasibility of developing and deploying grid-scale SMRs in Alberta.

The T&T energy and natural resources team in Canada will support Capital Power to identify federal requirements and industry best practices in areas including nuclear operations risk management and the systems and controls needed across all phases of potential SMR project development, a release reads.

The company will work alongside subcontractor Nuclear Promise X, a nuclear innovation company.

“We look forward to supporting Capital Power in their effort to gather insights on how nuclear energy could be part of the solution for delivering reliable, safe and carbon-free energy in Alberta,” said Gonzalo Rosa, director – head of energy and natural resources in Canada, at T&T, in a statement.

“By leveraging the combined expertise of Turner & Townsend and Nuclear Promise X, we aim to deliver best-in-class Canadian and international nuclear expertise to significantly contribute to Capital Power’s carbon emission reduction goals in line with our commitment to build a green, inclusive and productive world.”
