PHOTO SUBMITTED — Peter Bros. recently purchased a Roadtec RX-700e cold planer and a Roadtec RP-195e paver for completion of a 48-kilometre stretch of Highway 3A.

Peter Bros. Construction Ltd. is a paving contractor located in Penticton, B.C. with four permanent asphalt plants and five portable asphalt plants.

The company also has an ARC asphalt recycling train, also known as multi-stage hot-in-place asphalt recycling that can recycle 100 per cent of the road being replaced, the company states.

Peter Bros. recently purchased a Roadtec RX-700e cold planer and a Roadtec RP-195e paver for completion of a 48-kilometre stretch of Highway 3A. The 37-year-old company has been using Roadtec for a long time, and the paving company has a lot of brand loyalty for the heavy equipment manufacturer.

The RX-700e cold planer is a heavy-duty machine that cuts up to 14 inches deep and features a powerful 755 hp (563 kW) Caterpillar engine, a choice between four-track and three-track assemblies and user-friendly operation and maintenance. The machine’s Automated Control of Elevation (ACE) system automates the elevation of the machine. The ACE system allows the operator and ground crew to easily make changes to the machine’s grade and slope parameters, states the company. Data is continuously updated and displayed, keeping crews informed of the most recent data.

The RP-195e is a 10-foot rubber-tracked paver designed for highway work. It features Roadtec’s exclusive anti-segregation design of the feed tunnel, the feed tunnel discharge and the rear augers. A 13-inch-high conveyer opening provides throughput and each conveyer is independently driven so material delivery can be dialed in for each side. The space between the conveyers has been decreased for more uniform mix flow, thereby reducing segregation. The auger assembly can be hydraulically raised and lowered, which also helps reduce segregation in certain mixes. A fully oscillating track frame combined with smooth tread and poly bogies provide a smooth ride and lays a smoother mat, states Roadtec.

“We have been using Roadtec for years,” says Joseph Cuzzocrea, general manager of Peter Bros. Construction Ltd. “They don’t break down often, but when they need attention, they are very simple machines to repair, and our mechanics know what to do with them.”

Both machines come equipped with the Roadtec Guardian Telematics System, which allows service technicians and owners to monitor machines in real time through a wireless signal and address any issues that may arise while the machine is at work.

“The Roadtec Guardian Telematics System is a custom remote diagnostic system for our machines that can address a problem remotely and correct it to maintain the contractor’s productivity,” states Max Peters, Guardian account manager with Roadtec.

Guardian’s intuitive Live Schematics allow owners and technicians to see all electrical circuits in a simple and efficient layout with real-time status of all switches, valves and settings, the company explains. The engine, hydraulic system, electrical system and grade control can all be monitored in detail. The Guardian system will also email fault codes, service reminders and production reports to the owner and service department to keep them informed on the status of their machine.

All Roadtec machines are fabricated by the manufacturer, who is the only manufacturer to use A656 Grade 80 steel throughout the frame, resulting in a more durable yet lighter frame. Bolt-on track pads are standard and save on track pad replacement time.

As well, the RP-195e uses serviceable Sauer Danfoss Series 90 hydraulic pumps for propel and material feed that run cool, thereby prolonging the life and lowering the maintenance costs of all components, adds Roadtec. On the RX-700, both the rear and front moldboard are angled in toward the drum, thereby decreasing the amount of material accumulation around the drum, which increases component life, production rates and efficiency.
