VICTORIA – Being able to charge your electric vehicle will soon get easier in strata buildings.
The Government of British Columbia has introduced legislation to facilitate the installation of charging stations for strata corporations and owners, states a news release.
Proposed amendments to the Strata Property Act will lower the voting threshold to 50 per cent approval for EV charging stations, require strata corporations to have electrical planning reports for understanding a building’s electrical capacity and require stratas to approve an owners’ request for an EV charging station at the owners’ expense when reasonable.
“These amendments to the Strata Property Act, combined with other provincial initiatives on EV charging, make British Columbia a world leader in supporting EV-charging infrastructure,” said John Stonier, past-president of the Vancouver Electric Vehicles Association, in the release.
Our Strata advises that electrical upgrades to our well maintained building would cost the Strata over $1million to provide the infrastructure and electrical upgrades for EV vehicles.
