Two Saskatchewan companies get separate fines for workplace violations

Two employers have pleaded guilty to charges for separate violations under Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (1996). 101063698 Saskatchewan Ltd. pleaded guilty in St. Walburg Provincial Court on Nov. 3 and was subsequently fined $8,571.43 with a $3,428.57 surcharge for each count, for a total of $24,000. The charges stemmed from a worksite incident that occurred on Aug. 13, 2018, in Turtle Lake, Sask.  A worker was injured while working on a platform attached to a forklift. Rosengren Farms pleaded guilty in Estevan Provincial Court to charges resulting from a worksite incident that occurred on Oct. 31, 2018 in Midale, Sask. where a worker was seriously injured while a pallet was being lifted. The company was fined $8,500 with a $3,400 surcharge, totaling $11,900.

Vancouver starts next public engagement phase of Vancouver Plan

The City of Vancouver is launching The Future We Want: The Change We Need as the next phase of public engagement to develop the city-wide Vancouver Plan. The goals reflect issues heard in the first engagement phase, such as increasing unaffordability, greater inequity, eroding trust in government and anxiety for future generations in the city. An online survey is live with take-home conversation kits coming Nov. 23 and online public forums and workshops starting Dec. 10.

City of Edmonton releases reports to start Budget 2021 discussions

The City of Edmonton has released a set of reports intended to form the basis of discussion on the 2021 budget this week. The reports include Q3 financial updates and proposed adjustments to the 2020 operating and capital budgets along with a zero per cent tax levy increase, down from a previously approved tax increase of 3.2 per cent. To hold the budget at current levels the city says a reduction of $64 million is necessary and is proposing “$56.5 million in program changes, efficiencies, facility closures and other reductions and $7.5 million in other financial strategies.”
