TIMMINS, ONT. — The Ontario government has announced funding for the Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group in northern Ontario that will support a program that includes the hiring of First Nation and Metis women in the mining industry as well as funding two feasibility studies to explore construction of two cultural centres.
This Aboriginal Women in Mining Technical Certifications and Business Development Program provides gender-specific entrepreneurial and management training, said a statement. The program will provide heavy equipment operator and computer certifications to Indigenous women pursuing careers in the mining industry, working in partnership with mining and other industries across northeastern Ontario.
The allocation includes $125,994 for the support group as well as $50,000 for a feasibility study for a multi-use cultural/education centre.
Other Indigenous projects receiving funding in the Timmins area include $88,940 to Wabun Tribal Council to train community members in underground mining techniques with the Underground Hard Rock Miner Common; $100,000 to Moose Cree First Nation for its training and employment expansion/diversification project; $170,957 to Mushkegowuk Council to complete at least three feasibility studies and for business planning; and $50,000 to Taykwa Tagamou First Nation for a feasibility study for a multi-use cultural/education centre.
