MISSISSAUGA, ONT.—Maple Reinders has been announced as the contractor for a new 330,000-square-foot food distribution centre being built in Ajax, Ont.
The contractor attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Gordon Food Service plant on June 18, a media statement said.
The new plant will feature greater automation than previous Gordon facilities, allowing the firm to ship up to up to 60,000 packages a day.
The roof of the distribution centre is also higher than usual, with a 55-foot peak to accommodate equipment requirements, the statement noted.
Site preparation is currently underway and will continue throughout the summer.
Foundation work will be starting mid-September, with automation starting in May of next year, and a go-live date for the full facility set for the beginning of 2020.
The ceremony was also attended by local officials as well as many of the construction partners and trades working on the project.
“Our relationship with Gordon Food Service goes back more than 10 years as we’ve helped them further strengthen their presence in Canada with distribution centres out west in Alberta as well as Ontario,” said Harold Reinders, president and CEO of Maple Reinders Group, in the statement.
“We’re excited to deliver this new modern warehouse for them in the town of Ajax and look forward to continuing our successful partnership for years to come.”
