IQALUIT, NUNAVUT — The federal government and the Government of Nunavut have announced agreements that will raise spending on workforce development in the territory by $4 million over five years.
The agreements will see Canada allocate over $34 million to workforce programs, said a Dec. 3 statement.
The agreements announced are the new Workforce Development Agreement (WDA) and the Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA). In 2018-19, Nunavut will receive approximately $8 million, $4 million through the WDA and nearly $4 million through the LMDA.
The statement said approximately 1,000 more Nunavut workers will benefit from the additional spending.
The WDA will fund pre-employment programs to provide people with disabilities with workplace skills and supports, and support academic upgrading for students in nursing and teaching programs.
The LMDA funding will provide wage subsidies and training supports for apprentices, and training to obtain national credentials for work in the marine industry.
“Through investments like today’s agreements with Nunavut, we’re ensuring people can continue to be competitive, resilient and responsive as jobs evolve and as our economy grows. By giving more people the tools to succeed, we are ensuring that Nunavut’s communities are stronger today and in the future,” commented federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Patty Hajdu in the statement.
In total, from 2017–18 to 2022–23, the federal government will invest approximately $20 billion in WDAs and LMDAs with provinces and territories, the release noted.
