QUEBEC CITY — The governments of Canada and Quebec, along with the City of Quebec, have announced details of a new $32.5-million social housing project for homeless and vulnerable people in the city of Quebec.
A recent release indicated that construction of the future Maison de Lauberiviere will start next March in the St-Roch neighbourhood of Quebec City. The 10,000-square-metre building will have seven floors and feature 149 rooms and units for vulnerable people, as well as communal spaces and service offices. Of the total budget of $32.5 million, $30.4 million will be for the residential component.
The provincial share, $20.5 million, will come from the Societe d’habitation du Quebec, while the federal share of $4.4 million will be made through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund, under the National Housing Strategy. The municipal government will fund the remaining $5.3 million for construction of the building, which will be located on the block bordered by Fleurie, du Pont, X’ian and Mgr. Gauvreau streets.
The new Maison de Lauberiviere is targeted for completion in January 2021. The building will feature 131 rooms for emergency and support services for homeless or vulnerable individuals, and 18 transitional housing units for people living with a mental health condition.
The project is eligible for a grant of $146,265 from Transition energetique Quebec to ensure the building meets Novoclimat certification standards.
The statement said the new building will be energy-efficient, with high-quality insulation, high-performance windows and a ventilation system that features high-efficiency heat recovery.
“I applaud the perseverance of the members of the Lauberivieve organization, who have made tireless efforts for years in order to create an extraordinary living environment for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or who have mental health conditions. The vital financial assistance provided by the Societe d’habitation du Quebec contributes to supporting people in difficulty in the Quebec community,” said Quebec’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Andree Laforest in the statement.
