TORONTO — The Construction Institute of Canada’s (TCIC) 2019 Simulated Student Bid Competition is now underway.
The annual competition helps students understand the real life challenges in the construction bidding and estimating process.
Participating bid teams consisting of third year students from various programs and schools across Canada are required to submit complete bids based on a set of contract documents. These bids must contain quantity take offs for own forces work, a subtrade analysis and selection, as well as an overhead and pricing summary, states the TCIC bid competition website.
The bids are judged based on three criteria: most outstanding professional conduct, most accurate and complete bid package and closest to the target price. Fourth year students facilitate the competition.
This year’s project is the Winnipeg Soccer Federation (WSF) North Project, a 162,000-square-foot facility located in the Garden City/Seven Oaks district of North Winnipeg, a focal point of the multi-sport precinct for the Garden City Community Centre. It’s one of the largest indoor soccer centres of its kind in Canada and opened in the spring of 2016, hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps identification and training camp.
The design of WSF Soccer North revolves around a full-sized indoor FIFA approved pitch divided into half and quarter pitch configurations. Features include 16 field-level dressing rooms and a 360-degree spectator concourse with food and beverage amenities. For a full-field ticketed match seating can accommodate up to 1,200 spectators.
“In addition to soccer, WSF Soccer North is a multi-use indoor sports venue capable of supporting Winnipeg’s rapidly growing indoor ultimate leagues and touch football winter leagues,” states the website.
“The facility also serves as the administrative centre for the Winnipeg Soccer Federation, and Manitoba Soccer Association. The facility was designed and constructed within a very challenging budget and schedule through a multi-partner funding platform.”
The bid team registration closed Jan. 22. Bid documents were slated to be issued to bidders through the plans room on Jan 28. The intention to bid deadline for the competition is March 5 and the last day to submit a Request for Information is March 20.
In terms of bid closing dates, phase one, the hardcopy submission of the entire bid package, is due March 26. Phase two, the electronic submission of bid price, is due March 27 and phase three, the electronic submission of bid and forms supporting commercial content, is due March 28. Notification of compliant bidders will be issued April 10 and the close of the appeal period for non-compliance is April 11.
Awards and monetary prizes will be handed out at the Awards Gala on Tuesday, April 16.
