VANCOUVER – A Vancouver lawyer has been tasked by B.C. officials to assess how WorkSafeBC implemented worker safety recommendations following the two sawmill explosions at Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills.
Lawyer Lisa Helps will give input on tweaks to the law to improve the safety of workers.
Inquests were conducted following the separate explosions in 2012 that killed four people. The province also commissioned two other reports in 2014, the Dyble Report and Macatee Report. These reports and the coroner’s conclusions recommended changes to government and WorkSafeBC.
Stakeholders, WorkSafeBC staff and employees in the Ministries of Attorney General, Public Safety and Solicitor General, and Labour will be contacted by Helps. She will also give workers affected by the explosions, and their families, the opportunity to participate.
Helps work will generate a report and recommendations for the attorney general this summer.
Following their review, the attorney general will release recommendations related to improving processes or legislation.
“Government is stepping up to provide important and overdue answers to the families and victims and to ensure that resources are in place to prevent similar tragedies from happening again,” reads a statement from the province.
