TORONTO — Tridel chairman emeritus Angelo DelZotto is being hailed as a giant of Toronto construction with a passion for people and building homes in the wake of his death at the age of 89 on July 31.
The firm, which has built 85,000 homes over eight decades, has produced a video highlighting DelZotto’s lifetime of accomplishments.
Angelo was one of three brothers who took over the homebuilding company from their father, founder Jack DelZotto, and Angelo built his first major apartment complex in 1961, featuring twin towers, a swimming pool, a recreation centre and landscaped grounds, “the forerunner of today’s modern condominium,” notes the Tridel website.
George Brown College called DelZotto a “legendary city builder and generous philanthropist” in a tribute on its website. DelZotto was a long-time supporter of the college and in 2013, a donation from Tridel and the DelZotto family established the Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management, which offers eight programs including Ontario’s only four-year degree program in construction management.
“We are extremely proud and honoured to have one of our schools named after Angelo,” said George Brown College president Anne Sado in the statement. “Angelo had great insights into the sector and felt strongly about future-proofing the construction industry through education. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students in construction management.”
“Our industry lost a leader with the passing of Angelo DelZotto,” the Building Industry and Land Development Association posted on Twitter. “He will be missed, but his passion for people and building homes for the residents of our region will continue on.”
