TORONTO — The Toronto professional engineering community is mourning the loss of John Paul Stephenson, P. Eng. and founder of Stephenson Engineering.
Stephenson passed away Aug. 5 at the age of 80 after a difficult struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joanne, and his sons Tim and Jeff and his four grandchildren Jessica, Robert, Lukash and Aneshka.
Stephenson was born in 1940 in Willowdale, Ont. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1963 with a B.A.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering. In 1969, at the age of 29, he started his own consulting firm providing engineering services in a one-room office on Isabella Street in Toronto with Graham Eaton which today is known as Stephenson Engineering. The firm celebrated its 50-year anniversary in May 2019.
A few of the many landmark properties designed by Stephenson include The Shipp Centre, Consilium Place and The Sheppard Centre. As a member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) since 1965 and a designated structural consultant since 1974, Stephenson has also provided expert witness services for clients, PEO and the Ontario Association of Architects.
Throughout his 50-year career as a consultant, he received numerous awards including the Schreyer Award, the highest consulting engineering award given in Canada.
Stephenson was also a passionate volunteer for the charity Schools for Children of the World Canada, acting as both a director and fundraiser for the organization which partners with local communities to design and construct schools for children in Central and South America.
