Manitoba announces 2020 quarry rehabilitation program

WINNPEG — The Government of Manitoba is putting a Quarry Rehabilitation on Private Land Program in place to rehabilitate quarries and pits in the province.

“Up to $6.7 million will be available for landowners needing to do rehabilitation work on private lands,” said provincial Agriculture and Resource Minister Blaine Pedersen in a statement. “Under the program, each landowner will be eligible for up to $250,000.”

The provincial government paused the rehabilitation program in 2018 when financial irregularities were discovered, prompting in depth reviews. The Office of the Auditor General and the Internal Audit Office both conducted audits and provided recommendations that helped to form the new program, a release stated.

“Our government takes these recently released findings very seriously and our top priority is to ensure that any program dealing with quarries and pits reflects the integrity and transparency of all further programming. A review of the findings in the audit reports with Manitoba Justice is ongoing,” Pedersen said.

The program includes a new application and evaluation process and a cost-per-cubic-metre evaluation. The new Quarry Rehabilitation on Private Land Program will ensure eligible projects focus on private quarries that have been registered and have paid environmental levies, the release said.

More information, including how to apply, is available at www.gov.mb.ca/iem/mines/quarry_rehab/index.html.

The application deadline is Aug. 31.
