First Nations Projects Coalition supports Fort Nelson power project

The board of the First Nations Major Projects Coalition announced today that it will provide capacity support to the Clarke Lake Geothermal Project as requested by Fort Nelson First Nation in British Columbia. The project involves taking hot water from depth at a former natural gas well and bringing it to the surface to generate electricity. The project will produce between seven to 15 megawatts of electricity on a year-round basis.

Water infrastructure builds on the rise

Statistics Canada reported this morning that according to Canada’s Core Public Infrastructure Survey, construction of water assets of all types accelerated in 2017 and 2018. An average of approximately 13,000 kilometres of new linear water assets were built per year in 2017 and 2018, compared with 6,000 kilometres per year from 2000 to 2016. On average, around 1,590 non-linear water facilities (pump and lift stations, reservoirs and storage tanks, treatment facilities and other end-of-pipe facilities) were constructed each year during 2017 and 2018, compared with approximately 1,200 facilities per year from 2000 to 2016.

FortisBC puts $500,000 towards hydrogen implementation

FortisBC is investing $500,000 into research to see how hydrogen can be delivered through its existing distribution network. The School of Engineering with the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus will use these funds to study how to blend hydrogen with natural gas within FortisBC’s existing system. Funding is part of the first portfolio approved within FortisBC’s $25 million Clean Growth Innovation Fund. The company recently completed its first call for project funding within the fund focused primarily on renewable gases.
