BCCA announces Builders Code Champions
BC CONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATION — A sign shows some of the key requirements for a Builders Code jobsite. The program announced its Builders Code Champion Awards winners this month.

VICTORIA — The British Columbia Construction Association’s (BCCA) Builders Code program has unveiled its Builders Code Champion Award winners. The awards go to program participants who demonstrate leadership in creating an inclusive, positive work culture in the B.C. construction industry.

The Builders Code, which was launched by the BCCA in 2018, aims to establish a baseline code of conduct for worksites to ensure all people feel welcome.

According to the BCCA, the efforts of the six winners has helped increase in the participation of women the province’s construction trades from 4.6 to six per cent since 2018.

The awards were started in 2019 to highlight companies taking steps to combat discrimination, hazing, bullying and harassment on worksites, and to create a safety standard that prioritizes the importance of psychological as well as physical safety for all workers.

The nomination period was open from June 4 to Oct. 28.

The winners were selected by Minerva BC, BCCA and the Builders Code Governance Committee.

The association noted that an in-person celebration could not be held due to the pandemic, but videos of the award winners discussing their efforts were taken.

Here is a list of this year’s winners:

  • Recruiting and Hiring Champion: Chinook Scaffold Systems
  • Loyalty Champion: Westcana Electric
  • Workplace Culture Champion: RAM Consulting Ltd. (medium sized employer) and Lafarge Canada (large employer)
  • Community Champion: Houle Electric
  • Contractor of the Year: Mazzei Electric

“On behalf of everyone at BCCA, Minerva BC and all our Builders Code partners, I want to thank our winners for their support of the Builders Code and their leadership across the province during this challenging year,” said Chris Atchison, president of the BCCA in a statement. “These award recipients, the other nominees and the companies throughout B.C. who have adopted Builders Code are helping to shape a new workplace culture for construction and encouraging others to get involved. They recognize that the Builders Code has helped them set clear behaviour expectations among employees and supported them in the development of company policies, all of which are contributing to attracting and retaining employees in a tight labour market. Thank you and congratulations.”
