Province invests $53 million in new Markdale hospital
Ontario is investing up to $53 million for the development and construction of the new Grey Bruce Health Services Markdale Hospital. This funding is in addition to the $3 million previously invested to support the planning and design, bringing the province’s total to $56 million. Once complete, the new hospital will replace the existing aged facility, expand capacity and improve access to care for patients in Grey County and neighbouring areas. Construction of the new hospital will begin this week.
Joint funding announced for Milton sports centre improvements
The governments of Canada and Ontario have announced joint funding for improvements to the John Tonelli Sports Centre in Milton, Ont. The Government of Canada is investing $558,655; the Government of Ontario is providing $465,499; while the Town of Milton is providing $372,483. The project work will include the replacement of 8,000 square feet of sport flooring to provide a safer surface for skaters; the replacement of wooden spectator benches with better quality and more durable seating; and the removal, regrading and repaving of the parking lot and associated roadways to improve access to the facility and amenities at Bronte Meadows Park.
Lumber prices continue to spike
Statistics Canada has reported prices for products manufactured in Canada, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI), rose 2.0 per cent in January, with higher prices for lumber and other wood products (up 10.8 per cent) leading the way. Prices of raw materials purchased by manufacturers operating in Canada, as measured by the Raw Materials Price Index, were up 5.7 per cent. Prices for softwood lumber increased 19.0 per cent in January, following a gain of 20.5 per cent in December. Compared with January 2020, softwood lumber prices surged 112.1 per cent. Persistent demand for softwood lumber was a contributing factor in these increases. From December to January, the annualized number of housing starts in Canada rose 23.1 per cent to 282,428 units.
Gowling notes, ‘Construction Act is a complete code’
Lexology highlights an article from Gowling WLG that analyzes the recent case of Tremblar Building Supplies Ltd. v 1839563 Ontario Limited in Ontario Divisional Court. The court upheld the summary judgment dismissal of a subcontractor’s breach of trust and unjust enrichment claims against an owner. Gowling writes, “In doing so, the Divisional Court confirmed that the Construction Act is a complete code: remedies not provided for in the act are not available.”
