TORONTO — The construction sector emerged unscathed as Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled “emergency brake” shutdown measures today in response to a growing number of COVID-19 infections across the province.
There were no delineations of essential and non-essential construction projects in the government announcement. The statement indicated, “Construction activities or projects and supporting services, including demolition and land surveying, are allowed.”
Construction stakeholders confirmed the information.
Maintenance, repair and property management services that manage and maintain the safety, security, sanitation and operation of institutional, commercial, industrial and residential properties and buildings are also allowed to remain open as are supply chain businesses.
The government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts, stated it is “imposing a provincewide emergency brake as a result of an alarming surge in case numbers and COVID-19 hospitalizations across the province. The provincewide emergency brake will be effective Saturday, April 3, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. and the government intends to keep this in place for at least four weeks.”
