Ottawa announces new RHI funding
The federal government has announced new spending of $1.5 billion through the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) to create 4,500 new affordable housing units across the country. Through the RHI’s Cities Stream, $500 million will be allocated to 30 municipalities across Canada based on the number of renters in severe housing need, local market housing costs and a regional distribution. Through the Projects Stream, $1 billion will be allocated to eligible applications submitted during the RHI’s initial application period last fall.
U.S. construction spending fell in May
Associated General Contractors of America reported yesterday that U.S. construction spending declined in May compared to the prior month, according to an analysis of new federal construction spending data. Construction spending in May totalled $1.55 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, a decrease of 0.3 per cent from the pace in April, but 7.5 per cent higher than the pandemic-depressed rate in May 2020. Private nonresidential construction spending fell 1.1 per cent from April to May and 5.8 per cent since May 2020, with year-over-year decreases in all 11 sub-segments. Public construction spending dropped 8.7 per cent year-over-year and 0.2 per cent for the month.
Federal funding to support upgrades at Kejimkujik park
The federal government has announced $1.16 million in federal infrastructure funding for Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site and Kejimkujik National Park Seaside in Nova Scotia. The funding will support the rehabilitation of infrastructure threatened by post-tropical storm Dorian in the fall of 2019. A climate-resilient pedestrian bridge will be constructed along the Mersey River trail replacing the former floating pedestrian bridge at Mersey River which had become susceptible to storm damage, and the Seaside trail network will be upgraded.
New CEO for Mikisew Group
Mikisew Group announced yesterday that Edward Courtoreille will be retiring from his position as CEO and will be replaced by Dan Gallagher, who has been with the company as COO. Gallagher started with Mikisew Group in May of 2018 as the vice-president of operations. Mikisew Group is the economic development arm of the Mikisew Cree First Nation based in northern Alberta. Various divisions in Mikisew Group service the Alberta oilsands in such capacities as fleet maintenance, transportation, site services, camp and construction.
