Leaders’ plans for day 17
On day 17 of the federal election campaign, The Canadian Press reports that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is in British Columbia where he will make an announcement in Coquitlam and later attend an event at his campaign office in Burnaby. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is in Ottawa and will make an announcement in Kanata. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole is in Ottawa where he will make an announcement and later hold a telephone town hall for residents of Atlantic Canada.
Hazelview launches proptech investment arm
Toronto-based Hazelview Investments Inc. today announced it has launched Hazelview Ventures, a venture capital business focused on partnering with early-stage PropTech, BuildTech and CleanTech companies. “Our deep knowledge of the entire property development and management industry will complement Hazelview Ventures and provide the type of support real estate innovators need to expand their reach and take their business to the next level,” said Ugo Bizzarri, CEO of Hazelview Investments, in a statement.
Small businesses add to COVID-related debt
Small business debt has not abated since the beginning of the year, with businesses that have taken on COVID-related debt owing an average of nearly $170,000, according to a new report released today by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). In total, the CFIB estimates that small businesses in Canada now owe a collective $139 billion due to COVID-19, a slight increase from the estimated $135 billion in February of this year. Three quarters (76 per cent) of small businesses that took on debt say that it will take more than a year to repay.
Osler comments on Nova Scotia renewable energy RFP
Lexology today links to analysis by Osler Hoskin and Harcourt LLP on a new program announced by the Government of Nova Scotia for renewable energy procurement. On Aug. 13, the province issued a request for proposals to procure a target of 1,100 gigawatt hours or 350 megawatts of renewable low-impact electricity from independent power producers. Suppliers selected through the RFP process will be awarded 25-year power purchase agreements with Nova Scotia Power Incorporated.
