VAUGHAN, ONT. — The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) has issued a statement praising the Ontario government for taking steps to help municipalities cut red tape and develop a data standard for planning and development applications.
Two provincial initiatives announced Jan. 19 including a new $45 million Streamline Development Approval Fund are intended to speed up approval timelines and accelerate the production of new housing.
“We are delighted that the government is moving to modernize and streamline the system and assist municipalities to transition towards digital service delivery and approvals,” said RESCON president Richard Lyall in a statement. “Municipalities need a standardized development approvals process and e-permitting system to help reduce the amount of time it takes to get housing projects approved in Ontario.”
Ontario has launched the More Homes, More Choice plan as well as a new Housing Affordability Task Force. Over $8 million was also announced through the Audit and Accountability Fund to help large urban municipalities identify potential savings and efficiencies through third-party reviews.
“We are in desperate need of new housing, so the initiative is a good fit. The province needs a standardized development approvals process and streamlined e-permitting system to help reduce the amount of time it takes to get housing projects approved,” said Lyall.
