The expansion and renovation of Humber College’s Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology is beginning to take shape and, once complete, the new facility is expected to help address the increasing demand for apprenticeship and trades training.
The project involves construction of a two-storey addition of approximately 16,620 square feet and renovation of about 11,500 square feet within the existing Centre for Trades and Technology, located at 110 Carrier Dr. in Toronto, Ont., near Humber College’s north campus.
Compass is providing construction management services for the $9.5 million project and other project partners include Barry Bryan Associates and Morrison Hershfield.
The facility was formerly a furniture manufacturing plant.
In 2009, Compass was also the construction manager for the adaptive reuse project to transform the building from a plant into an educational and training facility.
The new building will provide enhanced training spaces and facilities for pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship and post-secondary learners.
It will include a refrigeration lab, gas and oil lab, AR/VR/XR simulation studio, heat plant, study spaces, remote studio and collaboration pods.
It’s anticipated an additional 500 students a year will be trained at the centre in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, millwright and welding.
Take a look at how the project is progressing both outside and in.
