EDMONTON — The Government of Alberta is targeting the labour shortage by increasing apprenticeship seats.
The province announced it is investing more than $900,000 to increase skilled trades training access.
The investment will create 134 new seats at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, according to a news release.
“Alberta’s skilled trades are recognized nationally and internationally for excellence. Graduates from apprenticeship programs start their careers making a good wage and are able to contribute to productivity in the workplace from day one,” said Kaycee Madu, minister of skilled trades and professions, in the release.
There will be 12 new seats for cooks, 16 for crane and hoisting equipment operators, 24 for heavy equipment technicians, 34 for millwrights, 10 for machinists, 12 for plumbers, 12 for recreation vehicle technicians and 14 for welders.
“We are committed to expanding apprenticeship education to meet the needs of industry and get more Albertans working in great jobs,” said Madu.
