British Columbia police have had great success catching vehicle thieves with their bait car program, which uses cars equipped with a hidden GPS and recording devices to track and arrest criminals.

The program has sharply reduced vehicle theft, and British Columbia police are expanding the program to include "bait trailers." The utility trailers are commonly used by the construction industry, and are a popular target for theft and later sale to the used trailer market.

Car thefts in 2010 were down 65 per cent from 2003, when the Lower Mainland was called "Canada’s car-theft capital."
